Variable Balans is the active way to better posture.
When we sit for long periods at a time, we become restless, tense, and find it difficult to concentrate. But there is a simple solution – movement.
Our bodies are made to move. To tilt, rock, turn, pivot, extend, and flex. Movement improves our muscle tone and balance, stimulates our circulation and raises our energy levels. Vital for our general wellbeing, enjoying the freedom to move when sitting makes us happier, healthier, stronger, and more focused.
In Variable Balans, the seat gently tilts the pelvis forward and encourages an upright spine.
The angle between the upper and lower body increases, which greatly improves circulation.
Abdomen and back muscles engage to keep the spine upright, which strengthens core muscles and prevents back and shoulder tension. Variable balans is the kind of chair that quickly grows on you.
Designed by Peter Opsvik in 1979, Variable balans is the original kneeling chair. A Varier classic, the seat gently tilts the pelvis forward and encourages a natural, dynamic and upright spine. After you’ve sat on it for a few days, you’ll never want to go back to your old way of sitting.
The Varier movement philosophy sees movement at the core of all our activities, because movement is central to all human activity - when we move, we thrive. Active sitting inspires continual, controlled movement. Our body intuitively seeks the ideal position, and the next position is always the best. With active sitting, the upper body is free and self-supported and has to balance itself. We engage our abdominal and back muscles, which strengthens our core and improves our posture and reduces tensions. Our feet and legs are in motion, which stimulates our circulation. The shoulders and chest are open, making it easy to breathe deeply. We feel stronger, healthier, and our concentration improves. Ultimately, active sitting is the freedom to move.
Active sitting burns about 150 calories an hour and improves circulation, oxygen supply and general wellbeing. Our focus and alertness improve when we have the freedom to move. Active sitting enables us to sit as nature intended – with an upright, naturally aligned J-shaped spine - and engages the back and abdominal muscles, encourages the natural curvature of the spine, and improves strength and flexibility.
